A Genetic Algorithm for Structural Damage Detection Based on Vibration Data

1. INTRODUCTION In this paper genetic algorithm with real number encoding is applied to identify the structural damage with vibration data. The objective function is minimized by directly comparing the changes in the measurements before and after damage, rather than updating the finite element model in the undamaged and damaged states. Three different criteria are considered, namely the frequency changes, the mode shape changes and their combination. A laboratory tested cantilever beam and a frame are used to demonstrate the proposed technique. Numerical results show that all the damaged elements can be detected accurately by genetic algorithm, even when the analytical model is not accurate. The weights of frequency changes and mode shape changes are also investigated.
